🧭 Why you need it

Canada is where the thing you booked the trip for turns out to be a January event. The ice hotel outside Québec City is built through December and opens in January; the Rideau Canal rarely freezes hard enough to skate before then; Ottawa's market runs weekends and selected days only, and Banff's has finished by mid-December. Wear cotton under the coat and you are cold by seven. This guide is the briefing that stops all of that - written as one continuous read, not a list of links.

✨ What’s inside

  • Operating in the ColdWind chill read as a clock rather than a feeling: at −28 exposed skin freezes in ten to thirty minutes. Merino never cotton, mittens not gloves, and 32 km of tunnels under Montréal to avoid all of it.
  • Québec City - Inside the WallsThe German market is six sites woven through the upper town, not one square, and free to walk into. Plus the toboggan run below the Château, a few dollars a ride and open on Christmas Day.
  • Québec City - Beyond the WallsAn honest answer on the ice hotel, which is built during December for a January season - and the half-frozen falls, the farm island, and the indoor market that runs a day later than the German one.
  • MontréalThe longest season in the book: a market of local makers rather than imported stock, normally mid-November into early January, open on both 24 and 25 December.
  • Toronto & NiagaraThe market everyone has heard of now runs under a different name and is ticketed. Search the new one, take a weekday slot, arrive at 16:00 and walk back through at 20:30.
  • Ottawa & the RideauThe canal skateway needs a sustained −10 °C and typically opens in January, and the city's own market runs weekends and a handful of selected days. The national museums are why Ottawa still works.
  • Vancouver & the Coast7 °C by day and 14 cm of snow in the month, so pack for rain: a real German market on the harbour with 30-minute timed entry from about CAD $8 presale, and three separate lit forests and gardens.
  • The Rockies & the MaritimesBanff's market is over by mid-December, so the reason to be there is an outdoor mineral pool at 39 °C with snow falling into it - and the spruce Nova Scotia has sent Boston every year since 1971.
  • Réveillon, and the Two ChristmasesThe feast that starts after midnight mass and runs to three in the morning, what tourtière actually is in each region, and the three ways in for somebody without a Québécois family.
