🧭 Why you need it

England's expensive mistakes are calendar mistakes. Book Bath for the weekend before Christmas and its market closed around the 13th; take a cheap Monday-and-Tuesday break in York and find the market shut on the Tuesday; arrive on the 25th and there is no National Rail service anywhere in the country, and in London no Tube, bus or tram at all. This guide is the briefing that stops all of that - every market's usual pattern and its last day, and a plan for the days the country closes.

✨ What’s inside

  • York & the NorthThe St Nicholas Fair is the exception to every other market here: about 85% of its traders are Yorkshire-based. It usually runs mid-November to about 21 December and is closed every Tuesday.
  • Birmingham & the MidlandsThe Frankfurt Market is the largest in England and the one with a real mug deposit and a green token. It runs to 24 December - but New Street station has been shut for engineering 24-28 December.
  • Bath, Winchester & the SouthBath runs about eighteen days and is usually over by about 13 December, which people book straight past every year. Winchester sets its chalets in the cathedral close, free to walk into, to about the 22nd.
  • London at ChristmasHyde Park's Winter Wonderland is a funfair with market huts in it, ticketed and timed. The free half is better: Regent Street, the store windows, and the Trafalgar Square tree Norway has sent since 1947.
  • PantomimeHow the form works so you are not the only one sitting in silence, what a seat costs (about £15-60), and why you book direct with the theatre months ahead rather than through a resale site.
  • Carols, Cathedrals & ChoirsEvensong is sung most days, free, unticketed and about forty-five minutes, and almost no visitor knows they can walk in. Plus the King's College ballot that replaced the overnight Christmas Eve queue.
  • Christmas Day, Boxing Day & the ShutdownNo National Rail service anywhere on the 25th, and no Tube, bus or tram in London. Then Boxing Day: a full football programme, the sales from dawn, and the charity cold-water swims.
  • The Round, the Card & the Hour to GoOrdering at the bar, buying in rounds, not tipping for a pint - and the hour that decides the evening, which is 15:00 on a weekday rather than 18:00 on the second December Saturday.
  • Quick-Start EssentialsContactless on everything including London buses, Type G plugs that fit nothing you own, daylight from about 8am to 4pm, and a season set by operators rather than Advent: mid-November to 22 December.
