Scotland at Christmas & Hogmanay Travel Guide
≈ $34 USD · Charged in EUR.
Winter 2026 edition. Every opening time, closing date and price in it was checked for this season, so it is on sale until 2 January and then comes down. The next edition is rewritten from scratch.
🧭 Why you need it
Scotland catches people out by assuming Christmas is the main event. Fly in for the 25th and the country is shut, with no trains running anywhere in Britain that day. Arrive on the 31st for one night and you have already missed the torchlight procession on the 29th, which is the best thing on the programme. Walk down to Stonehaven's fireballs at 23:45 and the street may have been closed since 23:00. This guide is the briefing that stops all of that - written as one continuous read, not a list of links.
✨ What’s inside
- Christmas Banned, Hogmanay BuiltThe Kirk discouraged Christmas here for close to four hundred years and it was not a public holiday until 1958 - which is why the New Year customs feel ancient and the decorations feel borrowed. Plus first-footing: coal, salt, shortbread, whisky, and after midnight, never before.
- Edinburgh's HogmanayFour days, not one: the torchlight procession on the 29th at about 18:30, the Night Afore, the ticketed Street Party, and First Footin' on 1 January, which is free, indoors and almost unknown to visitors.
- Edinburgh's ChristmasStraight about what it is - one market site plus a funfair under the castle rock - and about the one thing that makes it matter: it runs to about 3 January, when every English market shut on the 22nd.
- Stonehaven & the Fire NightsAbout forty people swing burning cages of wire down a High Street at midnight, free and unticketed. The instruction that matters: be there from 22:00, because access closes once the street is full and that can happen any time after 23:00.
- The Dooks, and the Morning AfterWhere New Year dips are documented, what 6–8 °C water actually does to you on immersion, and an honest warning that the famous Loony Dook's current status could not be confirmed, so no trip should be built on it.
- Up Helly Aa - a Separate TripLerwick, last Tuesday in January, around 47 squads and a full-size galley burned in front of the town. It is not a Christmas add-on, the halls are invitation-only, and the beds go roughly a year ahead.
- Glasgow & the WestFifty minutes from Edinburgh, four trains an hour, free major museums and normal prices - the answer when Edinburgh on 30 and 31 December has gone or doubled. Check the last train back before you try to do both.
- The Highlands in WinterGlencoe is ninety minutes from Glasgow and empty at the end of December. Also the hard part: snow gates that close without warning, a day that has to finish by 15:30, and winter hillwalking that is mountaineering, not walking.
- What Shuts, and WhenThere are no trains at all anywhere in Britain on 25 December, and Scotland takes two New Year holidays rather than England's one - in 2026/27 the second is Monday 4 January, not the 2nd.
